In the Five Element Chinese system, spring is a time to nourish the liver and gallbladder organs. These organs do many helpful things for our health including filtering toxins from the external environment and our food, as well as assisting in the breaking down of fats in the body. In general, winter is a time when the liver and gallbladder get overloaded, especially in our culture that emphasizes extra socializing, large meals and decreased exercise during the dark winter months. To restore balance after winter and begin your spring cleanse, these Yin poses channel liver chi through the inner legs and gallbladder chi through the outer leg meridians.

I really liked it, but for some reason all these "Yin Yoga" classes bring up a lot of emotions for me - mostly irritability and anxiety. But afterwards I feel good. Do you know why that is?

Hi yogajac,
I'll answer this for Melina ;)
Yes, this practice is definitely appropriate before bedtime. Yin Yoga is very grounding, soothing, helps to clear the mind and definitely facilitates R&R.
Happy practicing!

This practice pairs beautifully with your spring vinyasa session. Both have inspired me to learn more about ayurvedic science, and consider ways of nutritionally supporting a spring "cleanse".

It's incredible, that after this deep yet simple practice I feel so rejuvenated and at peace. I really enjoy your narration about out inherent connection to nature and the seasons. I also felt inspired by the information about the meridians, the liver, and the gall bladder. So beautiful all the many ways bits of nature and ourselves are interconnected.
