Join Cameron Gilley in this live Flowing Hatha Yoga class at Wanderlust Whistler. This series of classic Hatha Yoga postures are linked together in a slow flow, guided by intentional breath. The arc of the class will be an intelligent build from foundational warm-up work, to a series of more challenging standing postures, followed by a relaxing cool-down series and Savasana, and ending with a short meditation. All of Cam's classes emphasize breath before all else, the practice of Pranayama being fused throughout the posture work, leading the practitioner to feel a sense of unification with their experience and an overall sense of deep relaxation and well-being.

Ahimsa and the Yoga of Motherhood

I became a single mother before my son turned 2 years-old. As the primary parent, most of what he would learn in the formative years of his life would come from me. Like many parents of little boys, I want my son to be strong, confident and have some athletic prowess. I long ago accepted that I would not be able to teach him how to be a man, but I certainly could teach him how to be a kind and decent human being. This has been a personal mission since 2007; the year my son came into my life.

More Yoga

Yoga injuries have been occupying my body of late. I have practiced yoga regularly for five years, but the last three months have been noteworthy in terms of injuries. Injury number one: I hurt my left knee trying to do bound lotus. I was so close, my toe was right there. Have you ever seen that bumper sticker that says 'put your ego on a leash?' Unfortunately, seeing it does not equate to the application of said advice

More Yoga

During SPA yoga, we will spend the first 15 minutes working through a slow mindful flow primarily on table top with strong emphasis on hip and hamstring stretches. The last 15 minutes of class will be dedicated to deep forward folding and supine postures. We will end the class in a long meditative savasana. Most postures are held passively for 1 or more minutes in order to access a safe and positive 'stress' on the deep layers of connective tissue in the body.

Physically, SPA Yoga will leave you restored as if you have walked out of your own personal SPA.

A Short Meditation for Moms

As Mother’s Day recently came and went, I felt compelled to share my thoughts on motherhood and how yoga and meditation has helped me breathe a little deeper. As moms, our days start pretty early, usually before 6am, regardless of what we did the night before. And so the race begins, making breakfast, packing lunches, getting the kids dressed, hair and teeth brushed, last minute homework, etc., all before 7:45am when I drop them off at daycare and make my way to work. I see other working moms dropping their kids off, rushing from daycare to work, completely frazzled. I can relate and see my own tendencies in them. But I ask myself, why? Why are we rushing? Why can’t we be more present when we move through these daily rituals?

More Yoga

Ever wonder why we spend so much time worrying about spring cleaning, purging our overabundance of things, reorganizing our homes, and trying out new body detoxes to clean out those winter cobwebs and reemerge fresh and new for the season. We spend so much of our time rearranging the space around us, and the physical space within us through diet and exercise, but so little time on our minds.

More Yoga

This is a rich, warming meal with a touch of spice for those evenings where you need a little comfort food. I used a red rice simply because I love vibrant, colourful dishes. Red vita rice is an ancient grain which has been harvested in Thailand since the sixth century. It has a really nice nutty flavour, and a deep burgundy colour.

More Yoga

Busy Moms Sweet Sweaty Time Out Flow

Andrea Marcum leads this strong practice, Busy Mom’s Sweaty-Sweet Time-Out Flow. This Marcum Method flow gets right to the point and gets the job done! Slip this in as your own time-out during naptime, play dates, or while they’re pretending to do their homework and texting their friends. You’ll emerge centered, grounded & ready to resume your super-human duties. Great for anyone who has limited time and want a generous helping of powerful flow, great stretch & stress release, with a delicious well-earned savasana for dessert.

Props: Blocks are a great way to modify. Stability is key as we encourage our mobility – without it we risk injury. I strongly suggest them as an addition to your home practice. As you will see, I use them frequently for modifications in this sequence.
