Greening Lawn and Garden Care

Summer has arrived. Because of the warmer temperatures, people will be spending more and more time outdoors working on their lawns and gardens. According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), municipal water use doubles in the summer months. Much of the increased demand for water can be attributed to lawn and garden watering.

During the summer, some municipalities declare restrictions on lawn and garden watering. A water restriction does not mean that your lawn or garden is doomed. In fact, there are a number of ways to maintain a healthy lawn and garden while minimizing water use. Here are some tips:

General Tips

· Water is often applied inefficiently, resulting in waste due to over-watering, evaporation or run-off. To prevent this:

  • *Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation

    *Water on calm days to prevent wind drift and evaporation

    *Set up your sprinkler or hose to avoid watering surfaces that do not need water, such as patios or driveways

    *Water slowly to avoid runoff and to ensure the soil absorbs the water

    *Regularly check your watering equipment for leaks or blockages...
