This is the first time I've tried Surya morning...

Hello! I am not so new to yoga, but I just signed up on my yoga online and I love it so far! I'd really like some advice with some hip discomfort I've been experiencing - during the day, my hip joints pop all the time and sometimes when I make certain motions, like lifting my leg to tie my shoe for example, my hips will cramp up until I pop them again. I'm also experiencing this in poses like tree pose - any advice on how to deal with this?
Thanks!

Hi Meredith,
Thank you for your inquiry. In a very general perspective, hip 'popping' and cramping is common and sometimes related to Snapping Hip Syndrome - this occurs when tendons of specific thigh musculature 'slide over' bony protrusions during flexion or extension of the hip. You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapping_hip_syndrome
The above mentioned syndrome is a potential cause, but other conditions causing this are possible as well. If these mechanical issues are creating discomfort and continue on a regular basis, I recommend that you contact a qualified health professional specializing in movement mechanics and exercise science (ie a physiotherapist).
Note: if this is diagnosed as Snapping High Syndrome, it would make sense to feel this occur in Tree Pose as we typically engage the hip flexors to lift the thigh and from which, we then abduct the thigh bone to place the foot accordingly into position. This can readily cause the 'sliding over' effect of the tendons of thigh musculature in the hip region.
Please let us know how things proceed with this.
Namaste,
Kreg Weiss
