Question: What small ways do you practice saucha—the yogic niyama/observance referencing cleanliness and purity of body and mind?
Yogic philosopher Patanjali listed five niyamas, aka observances, to help us stay on track on our yogic path. He included saucha, which we translate today to mean purity of body and mind. There are lots of ways to put this observance into practice. One of the most impactful involves simply being aware of how what we watch, read, and eat effects our state of being. Does starting our day with a sensationalized news broadcast help us stay tuned in to our deeper, peaceful selves? How about that morning cup of caffeine-laden coffee?
An organic soap company wants to help us take that observance into our asana practice. Vermont Soap Organics created their Yoga and Exercise Mat Cleaner as a safe, nontoxic, hypoallergenic and effective way to clean and restore your sticky mat. Designed by yogis and yoginis concerned about residues from the yoga mat manufacturing process, Vermont Soap Organics’ Yoga and Exercise Mat Cleaner is a mild and effective castile soap based formula. It works well on all water safe surfaces, including: mats, balance balls, foam blocks, chairs, cushions, straps and other yoga and Pilates accessories.
Plus it’s made from certified organic vegetable oils and botanicals; free of synthetic chemicals--artificial colors, fragrances, preservatives, alcohol and detergents—is cruelty and animal by-product free; not tested on animals; safe for skin contact and sensitive individuals; and certified Organic and USDA Approved.
Vermont Soap Organics is giving one (1) lucky My Yoga Online member one (1) Yoga and Exercise Mat cleaner three-pack featuring a travel-sized bottle, regular-sized bottle, and re-fill jug.

Every day I thank the element of water for cleansing and purifying me during my morning meditation. I also do this in the shower, and various times while I wash my hands before I eat or prepare a meal.

I bring an awareness to what I eat, drink and take in everyday. Amazing what happens when you read labels.
Clean from the outside and inside is the best.

I drink lemon water when I wake up to flush out toxins from my body and I make sure my yoga practice involves lots of sweat and clensing twists for a clean body. For a clean mind, I choose my thoughts wisely, aiming to evolve my consciousness with pure and loving thoughts.

I work daily to find the good out of any bad situation, believing truly that everything happens for a reason. From a delay on my drive to work, which has put me late, that saved me from the accident that happened just minuets ago, to the rain storm that stopped me from going outside to walk, but put me in the best place for that moment, indoors meditating and cleaning out the negative cobwebs.
I practice meditation to help me see life and my personal choices more clearly. I take the time to reach inside and understand my body so I can see what I need to do to keep it in good, clean working order.
I work on my yoga practice to clean my body of toxins and to strengthen my bones and joints. I keep my yoga space clean and free from toxic chemicals. I keep my home environment clean and as chemical free as possible. I de-clutter my home once a week.
I read to learn about the harmful affects chemicals and modified foods have on the human body so I can make better educated choices. I am also inventing healthy dog treats that are gluten and wheat free for my little doxie and her condo neighborhood friends...

Sometimes I do not have much time to practice saucha. I make sure to get meditation and yoga in my day. I love to use candles and take hot showers with eculoyptus oil. This oil really opens the lungs and brings a great tingling sensation to the scalp and body.
