Hi Michael, What you are describing as a 'shock' could either be a muscle spasm or pinching of a nerve in the cervical or upper thoracic region. When we do downward facing dog on the elbows, there is less ability to externally rotate the upper arm bone - the elbow position has a tendency to rotate the upper arm bone internally which pulls the shoulders and shoulder blades towards the neck. This generates compression issues for the neck and upper back. When you move your chin towards the ground, this places your cervical spine in a 'back arch' - to do this, the neck extensor muscles and accessory muscles of the upper back contract. This contraction of the extensor muscles further adds to the compression issues started by the shoulder girdle. So, some tips: *keep your head and neck neutral in the pose and variations like this *when you place your elbows on the ground, prepare in advance by rotating your upper arm bones outwards/externally PLUS feed your shoulders/shoulder blades away from the neck as you invert the upper body (note: the arms will internally rotate if the elbows are excessively wide and the hands are inside the width of the elbows - hence, if your hands are positioned inside the elbow width or are closed together, extra focus will be required to draw your shoulder blades back and away from the neck. Let us know if this helps, Kreg Weiss MyYogaOnline.com

I have a chronic pain condition. My regular yoga instructor has been out for a few months due to illness. This class is the first yoga/pilates type class I have taken in that time. Ahhhhhhhhhh:-)

Dear Nico, I have a problem with one move. It is where you clasp your hands in front and lower your head to the ground over top. The position is similar to down facing dog, but on the elbows. When I lower myself and touch my chin to the ground, I invariably get a "tweak" between my shoulder blade and my spine (the little space in between). It is not painful, but like an electric shock. No matter how much I focus on keeping my shoulders, and position fully flexed, I get some degree of this shock always. Do you have any advice on how to solve this problem? Thanks, Michael.

I tried yoagalates after being totally put off by pilates traditional. I know that pilates is great to stregthen, but I felt angry and frustrated after trying it (multiple times). I think this is the best of both worlds! It's balanced and you feel like you've had a workout without wanting to swear off it forever. Thanks!

I like the way you explain each pose and break it down to different levels of ability. Many thanks! Ann
