Tighten loose ligaments, is this possible?

Postby araun24 » Mon Jun 21, 2010 5:11 am

Dear Expert

I'm working a lot on my feet, years ago, they had no arches and I had pain in feet and knees. Now, my medial arch is really strong and feels good, even if I have to be attentive. But the ligaments of the front arch are so loose, my metatarsal joints are almost on the floor and drift apart. It's called splayfoot, I think. I'm working with great foot exercices. I'd like so much to get back the resilience of my forefoot, but this means, the loose ligaments would have to tighten. Is this possible, that ligaments get shorter, or can we only strengthen our fascia/muscles?

Thanks a lot for your time and answer!

hi araun24,

unlike muscles and tendons, ligaments have a much more dense structuring (along with a different connective tissue makeup) such that they are designed to have less expansion. ligaments are initially designed for SUPPORT and therefore durability is desired. some practitioners, however, prefer to explore ligament tension to help increase the flexibility of joints - this must be done with great care as to not disrupt the overall integrity of the joint structure - overly loose support around the joint can lead to chronic or acute injuries.

to directly answer your question, yes ligaments like muscles and tendons can be shorten/tightened - as we age, ligaments naturally shorten especially with lack of stretching and a sedentary lifestyle.

in your case, continue any prescribed exercises - i am assuming you are doing exercises that engage the transverse arch - these exercises will ideally strengthen the muscular of the foot offering support that is not being provided by the ligaments - if you have not received specific exercises from a qualified foot specialist, please consider doing so.

we hope this helps,

Dear Kreg

Thank you very much for your helpful answer. I'm doing exactly the exercices for the transverse arch you described below and you encouraged me to keep them up, whenever it seems sometimes hopeless!

grateful
