Compression of the lower back

I tried a yin yoga video for the first time the other day and the instructor puts you in an asana with the aim to compress the lower back. I have always been told that compressing the lower back is a bad thing and to avoid it. I would like to know when it is a good thing and when it is bad as well as why. Thank you!

Re compression of the back - as someone with a previous bad back , i never realised it could be good but i tried this posture and found it worked wonders for my lower back. The only thing id say is take it very slowly and if anything feels painful stop and come back out just as slowly. We have to be careful with our backs :)
