    • How much yoga?

      May 22, 2011 at 9:05am

I've practice yoga for a few years, but rather sporadically. I'll do it once a week for a while...then not do it at all for a month. I lift weights mostly and do some cardio. I want to incorporate a lot more yoga into my routine for the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. How often to do you suggest practicing yoga? Every day? In combination with weight training and cardio?
Thank you in advance for answering my question.

      • Hi Megan,
The frequency, type and duration of yoga practices is so unique to each individual and what is happening in their lives at that time. For my busier patients who have a hard time committing to a regular practice I ask them to incorporate a posture into their life as often as possible (until they feel how yoga can benefit their busy lifestyles and becomes a higher priority for them!). While a regular practice is ideal - be that daily, a few times a week, or weekly - a posture or two taken while the kettle is boiling, during commercials, while on hold, between finishing work for the day and easing into evening routine, etc. is better than no yoga at all. It is important to be a little more gentle with ourselves during these times of random, intermittent postures as muscles are generally not as warm and flexible as they are with a full practice.
Otherwise, the frequency is really up to you. On days when you are doing a weight and/or cardio workout then a short yoga practice afterwards to stretch your muscles and calm your mind is great, with perhaps a longer yoga practice on days when you do not do other forms of exercise to promote strength and balance throughout the body.

      • Thank you for the responses. I've been doing long yoga sessions a couple times a week, and some shorter ones on days that I do weights. I feel that it's working really well for me and I'm finding that I'm transitioning into more yoga and less other forms of exercise because it feels right.
