                • lower back pain

                  March 12, 2012 at 12:08pm

I've been doing yoga for a month now, morning and night with an hour session each. I felt great up until yesterday. I'm a beginner so the yoga class i do arent too difficult. Yesterday i felt sore all over my body so i decided to rest, however today my lower back is killing me, i cant even sit up straight without feeling the pain. I only feel the pain on the left side of my lower back. I was wondering wether i should force myself to do yoga, or should i rest to feel better? The weird part is i didnt feel any pain after yoga 2 days ago, i felt great. I hope it goes away soon, feeling unhealthy without yoga :C

                  • I had the same thing happen to me! I've been inactive for 1 week and although my back pain is better but it's still noticeably there. Let me know if that works for you!

                  • I'm not sure what caused my back pain to go away, i tried the turmeric powder and loved it. I also took many hot baths. Even with the pain i forced myself to do some yoga, but very gently. For example normally when i stand up i would be able to touch the floor, but because of the back pain i didnt even come close but i did it anyways. At the end of every session my back felt way better. My mom is a masseuse, thai massage so i learnt a lot about massage to help muscle pain, so i massaged my back with lavender oil and felt better afterwards. Now the pain is gone, but i'm still curious what caused it. Hope your back pain goes aways, i can feel your pain :C

                  • YOGA

                    February 19, 2012 at 3:41pm

Since i started yoga online, so 6 days ago i've been practicing yoga 2 hours a day. I change videos from 'Beginner Yoga Practice' by Marla Waal , 'Yin Yoga' by Bernie Clark, 'Pilates for biginners' by Kristen Mcgee, and tried 'A quick stretch' by Clara Roberts-oss. I love all of them. I do a session in the morning and a session at night. I like to do Marla's and Bernie's session in the morning because its very relaxing and it wakes me up slowly. Kristen's i like to do them at around 8pm. How many years of experience would you need to be able to do the advanced video classes? If someone practices 10 hours of yoga per week.

                    • Hi Celine
                      Greetings from Vancouver!
There really is no cut and dry answer for how many years of experience it would take for one's practice to progress. The list of variables is endless including a person's age fitness level, whether they have any experience in other specific types of movement work; how focused they are on their practice while they are practicing yoga (this can vary a lot!) and what their intention is within - ie are they moving and breathing from an 'external' competitive place where they push into places they are not ready to be or are they truly and deeply 'tuned in'.
Our bodies/minds/emotional states change from day to day and so this also affects the 'level' of class we take. Some styles of yoga like Yin, or Restorative, are inherently gentle and can be done by anyone, but this does not make them any less powerful (in fact they be more so). I have been practicing for many years and often a very gentle "lower level" class is what I crave.
I invite you to think of each class as a transformational inward experience; rather than a step towards an external goal... And actually, yoga has a way of teaching us this, regardless.
But if levels are truly important to you, just tune in, and be in the moment during each asana (yoga pose) and each breath therein, with the understanding that your body and mind will open, and that progress is on it's way..and that it the journey will be an amazing one.
                      Namaste.

                    • Thank you so much, Level isn't so important to me. Just when i see the advanced video, i'd like to be able to do that. To me its just beautiful :D But i know it takes time and patient, you cant rush it. So i will continue on to practice yoga at my pace, i'm sure one day it'll come naturally. Thank you for replying.
                      Namaste.
