How do I get strong? ...Pole Vault Athlete here looking to build yoga and flexibility into my strength and performance routine. Build muscle, transform body without loosing what I already have... Is that possible? I throughly enjoy the meditative, focus and relaxing elements yoga brings to my being.

        Hi Gabriel,

Yes, building strength is possible. However, if you are looking to build strength related to a specific activity or sport, I highly recommend that you gain direct advise on sport-specific training as well as counter balancing training to offset any musculoskeletal imbalances that your sport training may create. Many sports can be dominant in one side of the body or one set of muscle groups, so it is essential to have a program that provides proper recovery of those conditioned muscles as well as training to sustain balance otherwise chronic injuries can flare up.

Yoga can be an excellent tool for your sport to develop focus, maintain/enhance range of motion of joints, and reduce sport-related anxiety.

I would personally stick with traditional exercise modalities specific to your training for building strength and power. Then, I would use hatha, restorative, yin and other mild to gentle practices to develop flexibility and boost recovery. This would help avoid over training. You could integrate more vigorous yoga practices as long as they are functional to your training periodization - ie if you have an ample gap between training sessions and that the yoga flows/poses do not present issues with needing to avoid certain loading of joints (ie giving wrists a break).

Feel welcome to give me more background if on your training program and may be I can give more concrete suggestions from both a yogic and former athlete perspective.

        Namaste,
        Kreg
