Uh oh, crunchy knees...
September 28, 2011 at 6:06pm
I experienced some knee pain a few months back that was really bugging me. I managed to work through it by being extra gentle in my yoga practice. Unfortunately, my knee issues have returned... in the form of horrible crunching noises.
My knees became 'crunchy' over the past two weeks or so. The crunchiness doesn't occur immediately when I start my yoga. Instead, I'll be 5-10 minutes into my practice, my muscles warmed up and ready to go, and I'll take a squat- or lunge-like position and be rewarded with crunching knees. The noise is louder and occurs more frequently in my left knee, which is the same knee that had the most pain a few months ago. The crunching isn't accompanied by any pain (yet), but it still makes me very, very nervous. I don't want to wind up with osteoarthritis at the ripe old age of 23.
I'm looking into seeing an orthopedic doctor to find out what's going on with my knees and if I can get the noise to stop. I really hope there is a way I can modify my yoga to protect my knees without sacrificing the quality and vigor of my practice.
Sad day. :(

First day at my new job. It is always difficult to be part of a greenhorn research group; the lack of infrastructure is intimidating. In the past, I would have hit the treadmill to pound out my stress. Pilates today provided a much more peaceful release. I hope to continue exploring my practice every day, even as the commotion at work escalates...!

Hi Emily, glad to hear you are seeing a health specialist to get a proper assessment. When seeing this specialist, definitely discuss the types of yoga you are doing and if he/she has any recommendations on movements to avoid. From this info, we can provide you with tips on modifications and alternative poses, if needed. Namaste, Kreg MYO
