Shanti Uganda: Tuesday Giveaway
Posted on August 21st, 2012

Question: How do you give back?
The Shanti Uganda Society, started in British Columbia in 2008 with a vision to bring the healing power of yoga and conscious birth to communities experiencing trauma in Uganda. Since then, they have run multiple birth education workshops for midwives, established a reusable menstrual pad distribution program, provided over 100 Safe Birth Kits to expecting moms, and empowered teen girls about healthy relationships, nutrition and preventing aids through health and yoga workshops.
In 2010, the Shanti Uganda Society opened the Shanti Uganda Birth House. This solar powered maternity center, located in the Luwero District of Uganda, provides proper care to women throughout the pregnancy, birth and postnatal period. In addition to providing care throughout this period, educational workshops and weekly prenatal yoga classes are also available. A teen girls’ health and wellness program that runs out of the Birth House works to reduce maternal mortality associated with teen pregnancy by empowering and enabling at-risk girls with the necessary information, tools and role models needed to thrive.
Shanti Uganda believes in helping women by giving them the tools they need to succeed on their own. One of their greatest success stories is the Women’s Income Generating Group, which currently employs 21 HIV positive mothers and grandmothers. The Women’s Income Generating Group provides monthly workshops on savings and financial training, literacy skills and business skills. Each woman employed by this group has graduated from training programs and has been given all the supplies needed for her craft in either the beading or textiles group. The jewellery and bags made by these women are sold all over North America, with profits going directly to the women and programs run by the Shanti Uganda Society.
You can help to give back by purchasing the fabulous jewelry and bags created by the Women’s Income Generating Group, or by donating directly to Shanti Uganda.

How do I give back? By encouraging my family, my work family (colleagues and those tinies I teach), and my community music-charity family to be the best they can and to enjoy life and what they do, to be independent, honest and free-thinking, whilst still knowing there is a home they can come back to if things get hard. Oh - And by looking for and sharing new ways to enjoy life with all! Yoga and Robert Fulghum are my favourites right now!

My 'giving back' is done through volunteering. I make a conscious effort to always be involved in at least one volunteer activity. This had lead me to fulfilling and diverse experiences such as teaching in India, being a guide at an art museum, and mentoring troubled youth.

Hello. I am currently a Peace Corps volunteer serving in the Republic of Azerbaijan. This is a very small country to the south of Russia the north of Iran, and the east of Turkey, Armenia and Georgia. I work in community economic development and helped to start the Tote Bag Project, which is similar to what Shanti Uganda is doing, as well as CBT Azerbaijan, which is a tourism co-op that provides travelers with a network of local Azerbaijani homestays (CBT is like a B&B). This project helps promote business and economic development in rural parts of Azerbaijan. You can check out CBTAZ at www.cbtazerbaijan.com. I've been here for two years and will be returning back to Los Angeles, my home, at the end of Nov.

Over the last two years I have dealt with a deep and personal struggle with health and anxiety. My mystery condition took me through a research journey that lead me to a vegan, gluten free eating style, and a daily yoga practice that has healed my soul. Going through that difficult time allowed me to learn how to live better. I want everyone to know that peace and be grateful for the path that leads them there. I give back by sharing my story - even when it is uncomfortable to do so - in hopes that I will help someone who is working through similar challenges.

I give back by raising my family on organic whole foods and ideas of a hope-full future. Instilling in them respect for all living creature great and small as well as fellow feeling and compassion. I walk my dog every morning and he loves it! I also give my compost to the chickens who love it! In a small scale I feel apart of a bigger impact on our environment which is multiplied many time over by the growing numbers of people ready to heal the earth by working with and together.

After recovering from my own heart disease, I give back by educating women about heart disease and how they can create their health: mind, body, and soul. I do this with my blogs, programs, and consultations. I also give back in my work as a creative arts therapist and mental health counselor, where I currently work with women who are struggling with eating disorders. I assist them with becoming more conscious about the mind/body connection, increasing awareness, self esteem, and helping them to feel empowered about their bodies and lives; learning to view themselves compassionately, to live passionately, and to learn that they are more than a number on the scale.

I give back by seeing the good first, by allowing people to come as they are, to be unapologetically themselves. It is a reminder to be yourself, all others are taken. I give back by being a mirror to one's authentic self. As an art therapist to adults with disabilities, to teaching yoga, I give just to see one light up from self recognition and self worth.

I give back in a small way by volunteering each week at my local food pantry. I haven't started some big organization or raised millions of dollars for woman in Africa. I can't nearly match the effects that amazing companies like Shanti Uganda have on the world, but I know one thing for certain: by volunteering and helping those who are struggling in my community, I help to strengthen my community, and strong communities make a strong nation dedicated to service. Each week I help dozens of people receive food, job offerings, abuse help, and much more. These people don't always enter our food pantry happy, but they always leave with a smile. Every hour I've given is worth it to see those smiles.

I give back by being passionate about helping people achieve what they want from life. The more I give to helping others fulfill their dreams, the more fulfilled I become. It is virtually a never ending cycle.

I found the best way to give back was to take myself completely out of my comfort zone and become a yoga instructor. I have been teaching for two years now and loving every minute of it. I always come back to my intention to always give what I have received and look for nothing in return. Namaste :)
