About Shanti Uganda
Four years ago, two women came together to talk about how to bring the healing benefits of yoga and conscious birth to the traumatized communities in war-torn Uganda. With the help of friends and family, Kim Ridgewell and Natalie Angell formed Shanti Uganda, which they incorporated in 2009. They began with programs that included teen workshops for Ugandan youth, continuing education workshops for midwives, and support of an existing women’s income-generating group. Within one year, they’d expanded their reach, established a new women’s group, provided birth education workshops for midwives, donated over 100 Safe Birth Kits, graduated more than 28 HIV positive women from their savings and craft training program, and established a reusable menstrual pad distribution program. In 2009, with the financial support of Off The Mat Into The World, the Shanti Uganda team constructed the Shanti Uganda Birth House & Learning Centre in Nsaasi village. Today they are working towards their long-term goal of reducing maternal and infant mortality, improving access to education, and honour every birthing woman in Uganda.

Words from Bella Hwang, Shanti Uganda Executive Director: “Uganda has only known a tentative peace these past few years but two decades of civil war and persistent poverty has left its mark, as millions of children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS and thousands of women die annually in childbirth. The birthing culture in Uganda was left helpless by colonialism, which swept away local traditional knowledge and practices. Shanti uses yoga to help many teen girls and HIV positive women in Uganda improve their health and recover from trauma.  We also are teaching health workers and mothers in the area about the benefits of prenatal yoga. Thank you so much for supporting Shanti Uganda!”
