Book Review: Bringing Life to Whole Foods

I recently received a copy of Brendan Brazier’s Whole Foods To Thrive.  This was a delight to read and to explore especially as a followup to reading The Thrive Diet.

Whole Foods To Thrive is one of those ‘reads’ that afterwards, you feel such a huge sense of motivation to transform lifestyle and life habits.  Brendan delivers a balanced approach to learning why we, as a collective society, need to pursue a plant-based diet.

Looking at the personal benefits of plant-based diets, Brendan explains how the typical western diet is stripping life force and health from individuals.  He brings to light how shifts in diet can readily improve quality of living; the majority of shift being towards acquiring micro-nutrient dense foods.

Brendan also brings great perspective, which I hugely appreciated, on the environmental impact of western diets.  He establishes a very profound message in how a great portion of our climate change issues can be managed simply through changes in the type of foods we eat.

As a necessary component to bring validity to his points, Brendan applies some analytical applications, but all done in a manner that is accessible.  He follows these nutritional and environmental applications with a broad selection of recommended whole foods to maximize micro-nutrient health and to sustain variety in one’s diet.  To round out the science of his book, Brendan backs up these inspiring debates with hundreds of plant-based recipes.  One of the main challenges to shifting into a vegetarian/vegan diet is to not feel suddenly limited in stimulating the taste buds.  The blend of recipes is far reaching offering even a wide selection of raw food options.

After reading any of the books from Brendan’s Thrive series, one can not help but feel extra motivation to greatly change their approach to food, seeing its’ value far beyond the taste elements.  But more so, these books stimulate self-improvement and self-responsibility in terms of taking action for one’s personal health while also supporting real and effective social and environmental change.
