Tree Pose-More Than Just Balancing
December 5th, 2009
My Yoga Online has added a new yoga anatomy article by Kreg Weiss, Tree Pose-More Than Just Balancing. Kreg offers anatomical tips often neglected in this seemingly simple yoga pose.
Tree Pose (Vrksasana) is one of the most recognizable classic yoga postures demonstrating the beauty of balance, focus, and serenity. Often considered an introductory asana for teaching basic balance techniques, subtle alignment applications can be readily overlooked when participants view this pose as ‘easy’. Starting from the ground up, here are some important anatomical adjustments and tips to improve the integrity of your Tree Pose. Click Here to read all the tips.

Great post!! My favorite way to teach tree pose in a group is “partners” trees pose. I ask the people in the room to find someone their same height. As they form in groups of two, I begin the demonstration. Thanks again.
Love it - I’ll try to teach my young students these tips. You expand on them and explain details I was unaware of (mentally) but somehow knew physically after so many years of doing tree pose. Thanks for taking this ‘basic’ pose to the next level.
Yes, the tree pose reminds me of when I first took up yoga almost 20 years ago.I struggled for quite a long time to get a steady balance !!
Tree is by far my favourite pose. It was one of the first poses I was taught and I struggled with it for a long time. (Balance has never been my strong point.) Now I enjoy it and find it calming and grounding.
Thanks for posting the tips. I realize that I have been digging in my toes to achieve greater balance. My toes felt bad when I did this pose so I ended up not doing the Tree Pose often. I will change the way I do things and hopefully things will get better.
