November 27th, 2007
Combining detailed alignment and powerful, flowing movements, Power Yoga Therapy seeks to provide students with an understanding of “how” and “why” Yoga postures work. This Video Tip by Jesse Enright addresses the importance of maintaining muscular balance and postural integrity over aesthetics and performance. Jesse brings focus to this holistic approach through Standing Yoga Postures: Warrior 2 Pose, Triangle Pose, and One Leg Balance Pose.

Hi Chantel,
Your light headedness is likely due to low blood pressure. With low blood pressure, one experiences easy pooling of blood so when you invert the head, blood rushes into the skull. When you uninvert, the blood rapidly exits causing these sensations.
I recommend that you slowly transition the head from inverted placements so the blood takes more time to exit the skull.
If your light headedness becomes quite persistent and dramatic, I recommend consulting with health professional to insure that no chronic conditions exist.
Namaste,

Hi Carmen,
I’m glad you’re benefiting from the video!
There are many reasons for feeling lightheaded during your yoga practice, but the most common is the change in blood flow.
The act of forward bending inverts the head, which is something that adults rarely do.
Gravity draws blood into the skull when we fold forward and then quickly out again as we come back up producing a lightheaded or dizzy feeling.
If this feeling is strong I advise my students to sit down until it passes.
I find that the body gets used to it quite quickly and the lightheaded feeling soon disappears.
As for “shaky” legs, it’s usually a sign that your muscles are working.
This approach to Yoga postures requires that muscles work in harmony and balance with their opposing groups to create what we call “tensegrity”.
The stronger you get the less your legs will wobble.
Thanks Carmen!!

Great! very well explained! I am new(practically) to Yoga and more than fascinated! I have a question: how come sometimes I get ‘lightheaded’?? is it my breathing?
Also, my legs ’shake’ like….jelo(lol). Is it part of the breathing? I will appreciate your answer. In the meantime, I think you are great, and also….AWESOME explanation! In fact, I did tried this asana….while you were doing..it and I NOTICED THE DIFFERENCE! wow! thanks! Namaste, Carmen
