Build a Like-Minded Community With Hashtags

Yoga is about breath. Yoga is about movement. Yoga is about looking inward... but it seems lately that yoga has also started to be about looking screen-ward

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram draw us into the virtual world of looking down. We crane our necks awkwardly. We zone out and get hooked on push notifications. At festivals and conferences, the continent over, we have even taken to bringing of iPhones to the yoga mat; however, I have to say that, despite the seemingly anti-yogic addiction that is social media, I have totally loved the inspiration and connection that I've found through it.

Searching hashtags and musing through pictures has become one of my favorite ways to start the day. I follow accounts with inspirational quotes, beautiful vistas, cute pictures of animals and advanced yoga practitioners. I love waking up in the morning and smiling at the colorful events of instagram. Often, my home practices are guided by the latest challenge pose or transitions (provided I know that I am ready for them... and feeling up to it of course). Nature scenes spark my creativity and leave me knowing that there still exists so many undiscovered spots on this earth to leave us breathless. Daily puppy pictures make me laugh.

I have a total love/hate relationship with social media. I love to share (overshare). I love taking photos. I find that it's a great way to stay current with the yoga scene. On the flip side: I hate that I am constantly aware that a photo opportunity might be around the corner. I hate that I now take my phone absolutely everywhere.

But overall, on the spectrum of attraction to social media I am much closer to the like button. I am totally guilty of hashtagging. I mean, I created the #handstand365 challenge and I must admit, I love how that little pound sign is bringing people together.

Let us share in the amazement that we live in a world that allows people to connect at the tap of a finger. We can use social media for more than just gossip. We can find our voices. We can collaborate. We can elevate and most importantly we can love.
