Video Description

This energetic class combines yoga with martial art Capoeira. Capoeira was originally practiced by the African slaves brought to Brazil by the Portuguese during nearly 500 years of slavery. The Africans brought with them their own martial arts, but were not allowed to practice them. The movements were set to music and disguised to look like a dance or acrobatic game.

+1 Rate Comment DownRate Comment Up Kreg 2009-10-31 11:04:06 Hi klarakuc, Thank you for your comments about martial arts and violence. For those who do not practice martial arts, one can perceive martial arts as promoting violence. However, in most cases, martial arts is quite the opposite in practice - martial arts facilitates the practice of discipline and controlling one's energies. The element and engagement of these exercises stems from a defensive nature (not offense or attacking). True martial arts masters have a clear sense of mind body control generating a sense of peace over the negative energies. A true master shows an almost peaceful quality in the practice and in self defense. If you think from yoga terms, we too as yogis are in a mode of self defense against the ego and the external energies. We use exercises and tools to master and control thoughts/actions.
